The Blooms of Early Spring

*********************

Although today has started off cold and chilly (I actually had to turn the heat on), the weather belies the warmth we've had the past few weeks. The azaleas are beginning to make their annual appearances while the Redbud, Bradford pears and Japanese magnolias are already in full bloom.

With so many blooms around us, there's almost no excuse not to have beautiful (even free) arrangements in your house. Of course I am not suggesting you walk over to Forsyth Park with your clippers or perhaps "lean in" on your neighbor's yard with your hedge cutters. On the contrary, look for branches and twigs and other buds that create a simple, almost Ikebana type of arrangement.

Certain flowering trees and shrubs often benefit from early spring pruning and the trimmings not only stimulate the plants' growth but also can decorate your home. (Note: Do be careful to follow pruning instructions carefully as there are different seasons and techniques for various plants.)

Sarah Marie Photos: Savannah Style

*********************

Now here's an amazing wedding photographer that I hope to have the pleasure of working with again. Sarah Marie's style is fresh and extremely classic at the same time. Each image could easily grace the page of a high fashion bridal mag.

Based out of Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah and her husband make quite the team. They love to travel and are *so* easy to work with. As a bride, it's really important that you hit it off with your vendors. You want to feel both confident and comfortable with your wedding professional. It's even better when your bridal vendors work well together:

"Our flowers were done by Anissa at Urban Poppy. Wow. I love her and her style. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever worked with. I had a very specific idea of what I wanted the flowers to look like, but I had no idea how to explain it. Anissa knew what I wanted, without me being able to communicate it, and they turned out perfect. She is so creative and I hope I get to work lots more with her. She even let us use the birdcage veil that Ali wears in the shoot, she made it for her own wedding. I loved it." { Sarah }

Tying the Knot: Photos by inkBREW

*********************

Sunshine Monica, creator of inkBREW captured Carolyn and Daniel's fun side. Their whimsical nature shines through each image. In Sunshine's own words:

"This weekend I had the honor to photograph one of my favorite couples and long time friends, Carolyn and Daniel. They had a beautiful hand crafted wedding at a historic mansion in our downtown area; the two of them are quite the artists and built their own centerpieces, feather hair pieces and they illustrated their invitations. One of my favorite pieces were the silver wedding bands that Daniel made."

I loved the playful attitude the wedding party exhibited in this shoot as well as the striking color combinations of black, midnight blue and of course flowers of brights reds and oranges:

"The flowers were absolutely amazing! I couldn't believe how colorful they were! Love, love! They especially made the photos pop."

Carolyn & Daniel's Wedding

*********************

I had the honor of creating the bouquets for Carolyn & Daniel for their wedding this past weekend. Carolyn was my neighbor for a little while & took in my kitties whilst they were in distress & I was in Korea. She & Daniel are both creative, fun loving folks which I think was really reflected by the bright & juicy color palette Carolyn chose for the flowers.

A lover of Art Nouveau, the bride chose a rich palette complemented with midnight blue ribbon. It was dark and pouring outside as I was arranging the flowers. February is a risky gray month and bright warm colors are the perfect choice that clearly demonstrate passion, love and joy.

Lilac & Lime: Behind the Veil

*********************

This color scheme is really versatile for any time of the year. The paleness of the purples are "lifted up", so to speak, by the limey-ness of the greens. For the spring bride or a summer morning bride, this gentle woodsy bouquet is tied together with the purply grey of dusty miller (I stole from my front yard) and the moss-like quality of the green trick.

For the wood-nymph bride, a lovely addition could be woody mushrooms and dried branches- stay tuned for that one :)

{ in the bouquet }

lilac tulips, purple pom poms, pale purple lisianthus, green trick, yoko-onos, dusty miller, star of bethlehem, green hypericum berries and green carnations.

Pale Blush: "Behind the Veil"

*********************

I love my job. I'm grateful to have an artistic medium that is *alive*. After the joys of creating each bouquet, there's the amazement that a beautiful new bride is taking that little life with her down the aisle. It may seem really sappy to some, but it doesn't make it any less true.

{ about the bouquet }

star of bethlehem, pale green carnations, miniature white carnations, lisianthus blooms and blush garden roses.

Behind, "Behind the Veil"

*********************

Savannah Magazine's bridal event of the year: "Behind the Veil" was indeed a great success. The quality and caliber of the vendors was evident in every display (and I didn't even make it to the Telfair). Getting ready to present the variety of bouquets to be held by the "brides" during the fashion show was frenetic but quite fun.

Above are photos of one the bouquets I created; I'll add a few more over the next few days- but wait until you see them on the cat walk; the brides and gowns were so beautiful that it was such an honor to see my pretty posies carried along.

{ about the flowers }

pink lisianthus, fuschia carnations, funny little yellow billy balls (craspedia), yellow kangaroo paws, black bacara roses, protea (leaves)- a very different color combination with lots of texture and a velvet feel to both the kangaroo feet and roses. Perfect for a fall or early winter bride who wants a palette that is not typical.

Pink Blooms & the Green of Spring

*********************

Think of the soft velvet green of spring moss in a wet quiet forest. Imagine the pushing, moving force of shoots through fecund soil. Hear dripping of icicles into a running stream and the smell of rich cool earth. These are the sensations of springtime and I am ready for it.

This bridal bouquet is made with beautiful blush tulips, pale pink sweetheart roses, variegated pink tulips, pink hyacinths, green trick and yoko ono mums.

Normally I try to alternate the flowers in a posy bouquet. In this arrangement I've gathered groups of flowers focusing on their texture and color relation to each other. There are really only three colors in this bouquet: green, blush and pink.
